Haven't really looked into what kind of beamwidth you can reasonably achieve with a phased array antenna.

Much the same story as a non-phased-array antenna, given densely packed elements and good control: angular beam width (in radians) is, to zeroth order, wavelength/diameter. (To go from zeroth to first order, multiply that by a small constant, whose exact value depends on how you define where the beam edge is.)

though I think you'd go another way. create an array of SDR transmitters and synthesize their input from multiple sources ( to form a multi beam, multi content radiation pattern. )

There are phased-array systems which already do multi-beam transmission, e.g. the "multiple access" system on the original TDRS satellites.
