1. Good content
2. Content distinct from other random foss conferences
just to reiterate with some clarifications about venue, scope and
organisation:
1. The conference will be conducted by Ilug Chennai with logistic
support from NRC-FOSS. Basically this means handling the money as the
lug does not want to enter into those complications. So why does nrc-
foss not want to conduct it? Simple, nrc-foss is a national body, and
could be drowned with requests to conduct conferences all over the
place. Hence we have the policy of giving logistic support to any lug
that wants to conduct a conference.
2. Chennai was chosen for the first conference since both the lug and
nrc-foss are headquartered here. Since it is the first for us, it
makes it easier to iron out any bugs before moving elsewhere.
3. We had originaly proposed Anna University Main Campus as the
venue, but at the meeting it was felt that MIT is more accessible -
Railway station at the gate, on the national highway so all buses
pass that way, airport 15 minutes away, less traffic problems,
compact campus, and, most important a large and active local LUG.
4. All these decisions were taken in open meetings - first of the LUG
and later of lug and nrc-foss members at MIT.
5. The focus of the conference will be on newcomers to the FOSS arena
and encouraging first time speakers. We hope also to get good number
of speakers from the academic world who are working with foss tools
in areas like NLP, geo-spatial computing, bioinformatics, embedded
etc, where a lot of work is being done, but none of it so far
available to the FOSS community.
Call for participation will be coming out shortly, which will seek to
crystalise these ideas.
