Hmm.. I dont exactly understand what you mean by buffer
hacks. Thats how Emacs works. There are no hacks in it. They chose
to keep everything as buffers so that it is easy to extend
it. Even the cutomize widgets are basically text inside the
buffer. Just to make them look pretty on X, they've some widgets
here and there.. But still, the point is to keep it simple.
