Probably, you can start with SICP(google for this term) and understand the

I would rather suggest playing around with what he has claimed to have
learnt.
[1] Start creating small apps which would be useful to you, like a
mini-diary, a blog, a photo album, a contact list, etc.
[2] Run it on your local machine and use it. Try learning more and
better ways to the same and keep your creations evolving.
[3] When you feel you have got enough of exposure, you can start to take
small tasks from people as part-time.
[4] For this, you have to invest in participation and getting to know
people, parallel to your learning process. Join some PHP forums and
mailing list, answer to
queries, listen to what others say, what others are doing.
[5] Improve your communication. Check this list on how people are asking
questions, replying questions, etc.
[6] Participate in LUG meets and other UG meetings, get to know people,
share experiences.
Well, along the way you will get to know a lot of things like SICP. but
you have to decide what to master and what to merely have an exposure.
There is no generalized best way to do it. You have to try, learn and
make your own best ways.
