Cliff,
The Discovery Channel is indeed what we get , along with:
National Geographic, good but I seldom watch it.
The History Channel, (heavily biased towards Australian History during the
breaks). Good at times.
The Arts Channel, a mix of theatre, art history, classics, music
general documentary, Excellent.
Realto. International movies and documentaries. Excellent. Thoroughly
entertaining.
BBC World (poor image)
CNN (poor image)
MGM old movies
TCM old movies, generally classics (poor image and it is not just the age of
the film)
Sky movies 1 and 2. These and the Realto channel have best image quality.
Several pay per view movie channels (I do not subscribe to)
TVNZ channels 1 and 2 general news and entertainment
Channel 3 (Canwest) Excellent news/current affairs format, general
entertainment.
3 music video channels (one of which suits me)
The Maori TV channel
3 childrens channels
4 sports channels, 1 dedicated to the national sport of Rugby.
1 or 2 others of little significance.
Note that TV3 and TVNZ channels 1 and 2 piggyback on the Sky digital
satellite platform although they are otherwise effectively opposition.

You pay around NZ $70 per month for the above not including the pay per view
channels mentioned.

I guess by comparison with the US you would get many more channels for your
money. I personally would be perfectly happy with a minor increase in
quantity or no change at all provided that they could improve the image
quality on what we have.
