It could easily be both. To further complicate this, what about when people
say things like "my country/workplace/college/girlfriend/bank/local-shop"?
None of these things are actually owned but the possessive form is used
nonetheless.

It probably depends. Does the illustration in The Magnamund Companion depict
the monastery before or after the massacre of the Kai (and the monastery's
destruction) in MS 5050?
