Nitroglycerin's sensitivity reportedly is reduced quite remarkably if you
take pains to get it absolutely bubble-free -- the usual manufacturing
processes tend to introduce small bubbles, which are hard to remove, and
compression of gas bubbles appears to be a very effective way to set off
liquid explosives.
And indeed, one of the ways John & co. were trying to make ALASA's hellish
mix tractable was to rigorously avoid even a hint of two-phase flow --
hence chilling and pressurization, in particular. There is obviously a
problem with this at injection time, however...
