"We are advocating efficient use of the spectrum by everyone, not exclusive use of the spectrum by a few conglomerates with a business to protect." -Craig Birkmaier Wasn't the FCC established to protect the spectrum from the vary thing that is happening? So in other words, it is not that the FCC should be dismantled, but rather it should be overhauled, so as to provide the most public benefit of the spectrum. Which then begs the question, what should the role of the FCC be and not be? I haven't really put much thought into this list, but here is what I don't think the FCC should be doing: 1. A source of revenue for the government to spend on non-related projects. 2. A special interest group service provider. What it should be doing: 1. Managing the spectrum so that frequencies don't overlap, allowing for reliable and organized use. 2. Allocate spectrum to provide public benefit. This public benefit can be defined several ways: service provision, economic stimulus, safety services, etc. 3. Police action against those that would counter public benefit with self interest. First, agree or disagree with these? What else should they be doing or shouldn't be doing? Second, how do we get the FCC to do what they are supposed to do and step away from roles they should not be doing? Third, if they do what they should be doing, do we still want them to go away?
