Right. Just as people started buying FM radios "just to listen to
regular radio."

The point is, pretty soon they try AM again, and they don't like what
they hear anymore.

I enjoyed very much a recent visit to Best Buy, where some of their flat
panel TVs were tuned to analog TV, for whatever reason. It was amazing.
I pointed this out to my wife, where the image was just the same as we
had put up with for some many decades, even in large screen TVs, and for
some reason people used to buy these. What a great demo that was,
unintentional as it might have been.

Now it looked awful.

People don't have to consciously say "I want HDTV." They simply begin to
shun what starts looking bad to them, having been exposed to better
technology.
