I'm not certain that I doubted the potential success of LCD panel TVs, however, even if I did, it is irrelevant now. I do remember stating that any display smaller than 40" diagonal would not deliver the HDTV viewing experience.

And I have no idea where you get the impression that I am an HDTV disbeliever. It will have its rightful place in the emerging digital world, but it will not become another point standard like NTSC. What HDTV IS becoming was very predictable - While it is available free to the masses - as Bert can plainly attest - it is now becoming the basis for a premium television tier on the distribution systems that 85% of U.S. homes rely upon. Perhaps in another decade HDTV will be pervasive, and the CE guys will be out promoting UHDTV to drive the premium end of the market.
