Subject: Misc Errata
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/02fotw/errata.htm
"(126) Replaced 'Vonatar' with 'Vonotar', and 'jail' with 'goal'." - should be "with
'gaol'."
1a) However, the replacement referred to
(http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/02fotw/sect126.htm) should perhaps never
have been made anyway. 'Jail' is correct, and more standard British English
usage. Gaol is also correct, but somewhat obsolete, and less accessible to most
readers: many will assume a typo for 'goal'. 'Gaol' is used elsewhere (eg end
passage of book 3), but possibly better to change that to 'jail' for
consistency, I think, than the other way round.
2) http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml-simple/lw/01fftd.htm
Various sections refer to "your axe", or "your Axe", (inconsistent caps), even
though you may well have picked up two more weapons by then, and so discarded the axe. You can get
one weapon from the random roll at the start, and also:
276, 343: refer to "your Axe", but player might instead have a Giak Spear, from 305. 228: refers to "your axe", but player might instead have a Dagger, from 267.
297: refers to "your axe", but player might instead have a Sword, from 15.
Suggest replacing with "your weapon", or just omitting altogether in some cases.
It should probably be footnoted here that buying a second backpack will not
grant another 8 slots. Unless it does?
4) http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/02fotw/sect168.htm
Either add or remove a comma like so:
"is met, by the villagers, with great suspicion,"
"is met by the villagers with great suspicion,"
5) http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/03tcok/errata.htm
"This section is reacted from" should be "This section is reached from"
Hi Dewi
I'll take each of these issue in turn:
1) Yes, this was a silly typo. It has already been fixed in the xml, and will be
fixed in the online editions when we generate a new edition of the book.
1a) The issue here comes from the inconsistent use of jail/gaol throughout the
Lone Wolf and Grey Star books. Some time ago, Joe sent us diskettes containing
the original Protext files for Books 21-23, since we were having difficulty
acquiring the text. Section 175 of Book 22 uses gaol:
<http://www.projectaon.org/data/en/protext/lw/22tbos/175> However, in the
published Red Fox edition, this has been changed to jail; this despite "gaol"
being used in the published edition of Book 21 (Section 323) about six months
prior to this. Ultimately, we therefore opted to standardise this to "gaol",
since this seems to have been the spelling Joe himself preferred.
2) After some discussion about this on the mailing list, we decided to change all occurrences of "your axe/Axe" you mentioned to "your weapon". Just to clarify, your comment about Section 15 leading on to 297 isn't true, but 305 can lead on to 297 anyway.
3) The Project Aon Readers' Handbook quotes from Lone Wolf Club Newsletter #12:
"Realistically, you can only wear one Backpack at a time, and carry a maximum of
eight Backpack Items (Special Items not included)." I've added a footnote about
this to section 181 in the source xml.
4) This is another issue that goes all the way back to the original publication
in 1984. The first option is the better one, since commas are really not needed
here. Fixed in the xml.
5) Ah! This is clearly a Project Aon typo! Fixed in the source xml file.
I've updated the Errata pages here:
<http://www.projectaon.org/en/Errata/FlightFromTheDark>
<http://www.projectaon.org/en/Errata/FireOnTheWater>
<http://www.projectaon.org/en/Errata/TheCaversnOfKalte>
I've also added you to the Special Thanks category in Fire on the Water and The
Caverns of Kalte.
Thanks for reporting these issues to us. It's of real help to us. If you spot
any other issues, please report them to us and we'll see about fixing them as
soon as we can.
For Sommerlund and the Kai!
