I would imagine Joe Dever deliberately used 'gaol' *because* of its archaic quality!

Joe used "gaol" in his original raw text (see the relevant Protext files on the Project Aon server), which is why we opted too standardise to that spelling instead of jail.

For once, a tricky question I can actually field! :-)
