It is a shame in a way that Boxer have pulled out because there was a good likelihood that they would have provided a more accessible service than perhaps some others would. I talked to Boxer about the accessibility of their service and they were relatively well switched on about it as a possible competitive advantage for them. This is perhaps no surprise because Denis O'Brien who owns Communicorp which is the Irish partner in Boxer DTT has a vary good track record when it comes to disability issues. I believe he has supported Caroline Casey in a lot of things she gas done. I was surprised how much understanding of the issues his Boxer execs already had.

Hi Philip,That tends to be the way of the world. Having said that, you can't expect a commercial company to act as a charity. They are in business to make money, and you can't do that in a market with as few disabled people asthere is in Ireland. Some sort of subsidised provision has to be brought in by the state to fundthis sort of thing. Remember that the technology was being trialled from 2006 - 2008, so it's not as if it's just being lookedinto now. Many small countries, particularly in Eastern Europe are in a similar situation to ourselves. Interestingly, I believe that they are even ahead of the US when it comes to audio described programming; somethingwhich you might find quite surprising. But I suppose you do have a point when one considers that the UK have hadDTT since 1998!!
