You're right about the UK Derbhile. UK consumers were lucky in that the government and BBC were ahead of the game and allocated £600 sterling to a public awareness and assistance scheme which includes practical and financial help for people with disabilities to switch to digital TV. Obviously, in the current economic climate, this kind of expenditure is no longer possible, particularly here in Ireland, so our government are reassessing how much they are going to do in this respect and how to do it efficiently. We in the TV Access coalition have offered to help them with this. If you're really interested in what we're saying to them, you can read the transcript of the session of the Oireachtas Communications Committee where we presented our views and suggestions on this and other digital TV issues. It's online at http://debates.oireachtas.ie/DDebate.aspx?F=MAJ20090401.xml&Node=H2#H2 . It is vitally important that we are not all caught unawares by DTT so we're doing a lot of work on this.

Hi

Not exactly related to Tony's question, but the interesting thing I can see is that nobody has their act together here in this country about DTT. The Government are not moving on it, RTE have barely begun and so have the other providers. Boxer got the contract last year, but didn't do anything to move it forward, even before they pulled out.

Yet in England, elderly people are being given a helpline to ring and a nice friendly tech person will come round and set everything up for them.

We will all be caught unawares by DTT, regardless of whether we have a disability or not.

My 2 cents.

Derbhile
