Thanks Andrew for your knowledgable input to this subject. The reasons why Portset and/or their developer chose Embedded windows as the OS for this talking media centre may never be known exactly but as you say the experience of the developer programmer may have had much to do with it. I wonder how many soundcards will work with Linux systems. May be its a matter of drivers, maybe more. In any case I am not really saying that a small player like Portset can get its investment back in the same way as Sky, which obviously isn't the case. I suppose that for many on this list the key to digital media access may well lye in Windows Media Center and PC adaptations, particularly ohosted by very quiet Pcs. The unfortunate thing is that for anyone wanting to do a stand alone solution like Portsets, hopefully with pictures, they'll have to start from scratch. Potential competitor developersmay well be put off by a market already spoken for if enough are prepared to pay this sort of premium for digital media access - in this case without MP3 support! Let's just hope that another developer does see their way to producing a more VI embracing solution - not just totally blind users - - at a few hundred pounds less than this offering. I wouldn't like to see this price point setting some sort of expectation and norm for this sort of thing. The Netgem products are run on a special Linux kurnel, however, they designed the hardware themselves, and are probably in a much better position to do the initial groundwork - being a larger company and will get the research costs back quicker - than Portset are.
