I've heard people accused of "gold-plating" their projects, but this is the

I've seen mention of gold-plating cooling passages before, in one or two papers on hydrocarbon coking, as protection against corrosion of copper by sulfur impurities. There are several possible plating metals, but gold is the best match for copper's properties, and the technology for plating very thin layers of it on copper was perfected long ago for circuit-board edge connectors.
