And what make you think that a tamil name will prevent from people
around the country to participate ?
It won't actually prevent them from participating, but the naming process
becomes complicated, because you not only have to come up with a name but an
explanation for it as well, since it will not be self-explanatory to those
who don't understand Tamil.
Plus, there is a basic rule for branding -- the name should be simple,
easy-to-pronounce and have a high recall potential. If an Indic language
name is adopted, it might not be easy for others to pronounce or remember.
My name is just three syllables - ja+na+ni, but I have heard it pronounced
in the worst possible ways by people unfamiliar with it! A similar fate
might befall the event's name if chosen from Indic vocabulary.
Also, how then will the event be publicised by word-of-mouth? It will
become, 'the name that begins with <some alphabet>', or 'the event organised
by Chennai-LUG and NRCFOSS', or 'the event for new-comers to FOSS' etc, and
the actual name of the event will hardly get propagated. That is not good in
the long-run.
Ironical though it is, today, choosing an Indic name seems more chauvinistic
than choosing an English name -- because more people seem to be able to
read/write/pronounce English better than the language of their neighbouring
State!
Cheers,
Jan
