Don't quite agree. The thing is people get drawn into Linux for two reasons.
1. They get influenced by the local LUG or friends in wich case they
end up using what is the popular distro. In today's case it would be
Ubuntu.
2. A lot of people start using the distro which they get "trained" in.
This includes people in training institutes, colleges and offices. The
offices usually use FC as most of the production-linux-work happens on
RHEL and FC would be the default distro choice for trainees and
non-production usage.
Other distributions like Fedora & OpenSUSE come with 4-5 CDs which
contain most of the available software and thus are used by many people.
Though I agree that Internet connectivity does hold back enthusiastic
users, I don't think many normal-users of Ubuntu would like to have
the complete repositories at their disposal. Also, with the presence
of DVD's this should not be a problem. Doesn't Ubuntu provide DVD
images ?
That said, Fedora is an excellent distribution on its own but may be it
lacks a vibrant community which Ubuntu enjoys.
