With Mozilla/Thunderbird, you can set the option at
Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings > Disk Space >
To save disk space, do not download
[x] Messages longer than [4] KB
The label there needs some clarification. Even longer messages are
*downloaded* upto the limit set but bytes exceeding it are truncated
with a link to download the remainder, if you want to read the remaining
lines. This feature is a real time saver more than anything else, and
has worked better for me than the other options like fetchmail or the
gmail web interface.
