[Ilugc] [OT] POP/IMAP vs. online interface for mail: which uses more bytes?

Is the junk on these sites much more that the "user interface" in
GMail? Like chat etc. From what you say, I guess it is, but still...
All that could be turned off, to a bare bones plain html version...
