15 or 50, it is still much lesser than desired. Assuming we
have about 500 colleges, we should have at least 1000 staff ? I am
assuming a reasonable figure of 2 per college. And I am afraid we
might not have that.
Ramakrishna Engg College to conduct a FOSS workshop for their
students, we requested them to arrange a separate (parallel) session
for HoDs/Sr. Lecturers from other colleges to create FOSS awareness.
SREC was able to arrange one. [By the way, you might have got an
GLUGOT[0], the GLUG of Thiagarajar College of Engg,Madurai has
been doing a lot of these stuff from about 2004 or so. But what we are
talking about is, having staff who are really good at what ever they
are handing. For that, these workshops can act only as a trigger. It's
the self-interest of the staff that would take it further from there.
The staff should pick from where the workshop left and develop his/her
knowledge/expertise.
For eg., a staff handling compiler design, should be able to guide
his/her students in implementing a small compiler as a semester
project. And to do that, the staff should know the tools available,
and a basic knowledge of how to handle those tools. A workshop can
introduce the staff to tools like bison/antlr/llvm etc etc. But until
the staff tries using the tools, it wouldn't be of any help and in
that case, I would not call such a staff a competent one. The students
are the ones who will suffer there. Thanks
