An MPEG-2 playback component for QuickTime will cost you $19.95.Apple's MPEG2 decoder is absolutely horrid and far from usable. Not complaining, just pointing out.
Perhaps this is good analogy to what is happening in the FLASH wars.Apple put its resources and money behind MPEG-4 and h.264, providing only limited support for MPEG-2, which is by far the dominant codec technology for video world wide (broadcast, cable, DBS and DVD).
Now the dominant platforms are slowly moving to h.264 for a variety of reasons including video quality, bandwidth efficiency and better licensing terms.
