One of my brothers has a Hitachi RP-DLP, and it just doesn't seem as sharp

yours looks to me.

The problem could be that my brother is a cable victim. I've tried to tune
in OTA channels from his house, but he only gets KUSI, and that breaks up.
(Terrain intervenes; this isn't a modulation issue, as he gets no analog
FSTV over the air.)

As with most HD capable displays, there is a dramatic difference between REAL HD sources and the SD sources that once can access via cable or DBS. I have a friend with the 1080P version of the same 50" Samsung RP system. It is a touch sharper, but the major improvement is in the blacks thanks to the new 1080P chips.
