I'm surprised that any one of the major ownership groups has gone out and branded a Set-Top Box for general public distribution.
I'm not.

Ignore any financial issues for a moment, and assume no reception problems whatsoever.

Someone takes home a box and gets no pictures. Maybe it's not tuned to any channel. Maybe it's not turned on. Maybe it's not connected to an antenna. Maybe it's not connected to the TV. Maybe it's not plugged into the wall.

If it's your box, it's your responsibility.

WETA-TV used to carry stuff on their SAP channel that wasn't necessarily program related. They kept a list of instructions to help tell people who were getting SAP when they didn't want it how to get rid of it. One irate viewer called. The WETA person tried to find out the person's TV so the appropriate instructions could be given. The viewer said, "It's YOUR transmission; YOU fix it!" and hung up. WETA-TV no longer carries non-program-related SAP.

The Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network is distributed free all over the world. Back when Texaco sponsored it, if someone didn't care for the mix, they might write the president of Texaco, sometimes threatening to organize a boycott. I know this because the letters often found their way to me. If the person was considered a bigwig, I sometimes made house calls.

No doubt you have many free things you've picked up at conventions and the like -- T-shirts, bags, pens, etc. If it was something you really, REALLY liked, you might have had a brief appreciative thought. But if the T-shirt's color ran or the pen leaked or the handle broke on the bag, it's more likely you remembered the giver then.

TTFN,
Mark
