I think this thread shows that there is no answer to combating fraud for good, whatever system is used.

But they could go on the Internet and spend all of your money without a signature. I think that is a very dangerous scenario.

according to what I've heard shoulder surfing is a brilliant way of getting your pin.

As for what you said about fraud, I've said for ages that the cards aren't safe coming through the post like that.

Also consider this, as you say, someone gets your details by opening your card, imagine that they then intercept your pin number, they could do that but not necessarily intercept your signature as you wouldn't have signed the card at that point.

Hi Trace
You said:
My personal opinion is that its way easier to punch four numbers in to a
keypad than forge a signature.

orry but all the evidence is that it's very very easy to
forge a signatures.
Fraud is actually down, (when card is used in shops) as a direct result of
chip and PIN.

However be aware fraud is up, for (card not present) internet shopping
transactions.

Consider the following possible way of fraud:

Bank sends you card.
Someone opens the envelope before you get it.
They then make note of your name, address, card number
(as well as the card's security number)
They then reseal the envelope and when you receive it you won't be aware
someone else has all the details then need, to shop at your
expense, on internet!

Derek
