IMO this kind of advocacy is in bad taste. In a number of such  
instances, instead of attempting to troubleshoot a problem which  
includes hardware issues, people tend to use that as a opportunity  
to pimp up their favorite thing. Distro hopping doesn't grow the  
base for Linux.

if you *do* carry a livecd, it should be knoppix - which will help  
you get the proper hardware settings in case the distro of your  
choice does not detect the hardware properly.
