So finally we have confused the new man very throughly !

Well here enters the Red Hat fan, I would suggest Fedora Core 3, hoping
you have a good new machine. New machine in the sense it has a decent
processor (PIII equivalent or above) and decent amount of HDD. If you want
to be stingy for space then try minimal installation and miss some thing
and then wonder why something doesnt work !

Yes. FC3 would be good for him. Or Mandrake. 
After a few months of working in these, he can make the switch to
Debian or gentoo.
But IMHO Knoppix is good for beginners. After a few days of working in
the Live CD, he can do a hard disk install and have a Debian based
system.
