I'd second that suggestion :-)
I started with an old redhat, moved to slackware and freebsd.
Briefly flirted with redhat again. Moved right back to slackware desktop and
freebsd server [for personal use that is - all our work boxes are RH]
The only time I ever tried debian was when someone convinced me to try
installing slink. Took one horrified look at the nonintutive install (dselect
among other things) and went straight back to happy un-debianned life.
