Why not share your distro/experience thoughts in Ilugc Wiki? In
future posts, we can direct the OP there.

Hi!
I would like to share my experience of trying out distros
before I finally settled for to 10gb FC1 and 30gb Debian ( Unstable )
( original, official debian i.e or however you call it )
1. FC1 - My first linux try out . Burnt the cd's myself and installed
with my friend who also was on the same lines as me. (both know
nothing about linux at that time )
2. Knoppix - My very good friend Kumar Appaiah ( to whom I owe all my
knowledge of OSS and Linux, also a member of this group ). I made the
radical step of removing Windows totally from my system. It was
radical as said by my friends at that time.
3. Mandrake 10 - Really felt as if my hands had been tied up. Used it
only about six -seven times and it was on my computer for 3 months
4. Mepis ( Again Debian based ) - Really meant only for newbies. I
was really angry at this distro. I couldn't use lokkit to configure my
iptable. All my settings were being controlled from somewhere else and
I didn't know where. This is just one of the many pains that it caused
me.
After all this I feel that a newbie should go for Fedora
Core distributions. It gives him the ease of a gui and also allows him
to get used to the linux way of doing things. People afresh from
W!n$&#s definitely cannot accept the debian installer. People would
feel the same way as if they are entering the BIOS setup ( which most
people (running W!n$&#s) would be afraid to enter ). O.K Knoppix has
a much better installer . The Fedora installer ( Anaconda ) is a much
better when it comes to the ease of installing. Most people falter
only at the partitioning step and then it's a breeze even for a
newbie. I have also seen that most newbies are always interested at
first in making their desktop look good rather than learn the
technicalities of linux and it's powerful features. ( I have been so
and I have installed it for a few of my friends who too have followed
similar lines ) It is unfair to expect a newbie not to be so. So
Fedora Core -- My choice for newbies .
Bye!

Air Conditioners and Computers are similar in some ways. Both are
useless when you open 'Windows'.
