Hi,
"linux" - means different things to different people. For most
part, they assume the command line and GUI applications running
on linux and the facilities given by the platform for the
applications to run co-operatively.
This is my advice. It is better that whatever you learn can be
applied in windows platform too. I would suggest take a TCL
shell, in linux or windows and start doing command line stuffs.
In TCL, the difference between command line and programming
language is not there.
I would suggest this investment of time and efforts pays-off
more than learning basic linux-specific commands like "ls" .
Whatever you have learnt can be applied in windows and linux
except for platform specific issues.Infact , it is an
un-advertised fact that TCL has many cross-platform attributes
and satisfies many things that java claims too.
In TCL shell, you would feel you are in command line mode and
not programming language . Then get to know the boot sequence
and then kernel compilation. I started with SuSE and moved to
Debian. I would suggest start with knoppix live-cd , no install
required.
