Indeed it did. A 4:3 "HD" set can display 810 or 540 lines within a 16:9 image shape to qualify. Truth is, because of beam spot size, a picture scaled this way often looks better on this type of set than when using 'vertical compression' to scan all 1080/720 lines within a 16:9 space, which usually causes scan lines to overlap.
