Well, I'm not sure if we will actually proceed with using SVG files, but I persisted and completed the tidy-up I promised. Attached are 2 versions of the resulting image. CombatResults-NO.svg This is the scalable version of the image, it appears to flow fine at all text sizes and is 28k. It could be saved as an svgz which would compress it to a measly 3k. CombatResults-NO.png This is the same file saved as an 8-bit PNG, it is 25k in size. Another positive side to the SVG is that since its basically just a XML file, the values in the table can easily be adjusted in a text editor for use with other books. I've still not managed to find a nice way of autosizing the contents of the image to match the image size though. I could have coded the object positions based on position percentages instead of absolute values, but I found that this was still dependant on the overall dimensions of the image and didn't affect text size. Even if we decide not to use them, it was a useful exercise for me :) ----- Original Message ---- From: Ingo Kloecker <projectaon@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: projectaon@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, 15 April, 2009 22:59:10 Subject: [projectaon] Re: Proposed new CRT On Wednesday 15 April 2009, Jonathan Blake wrote: > On Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 1:15 PM, Ingo Kloecker > > <projectaon@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > >> It's looking very good. If you change the available width/height to 710/500 then the table is shown without scrollbars. Do we really want to compress the CRT to a width of 386 pixels? In the books the CRT spans two pages because one page is way to narrow for the full table. Also the old CRT was split over two PNGs. It would be no problem to do the same with the SVG. > This could at least be fixed by adjusting the SVG to make it smaller. ... or by giving the CRT more space. I do realize that giving the tables more space than 386 pixels might go against our vision for the layout of the web edition of Lone Wolf. So maybe we could link from a small SVG to a larger SVG as we do for the maps if the small SVG is not readable enough. > In IE8, I'm only seeing the PNG fallback. Why does this not surprise me? > How does embedding the SVG in the page help make it more accessible? People with low vision can easily increase the font size (e.g. with Ctrl+Plus in Firefox). The PNG might also be scaled, but I expect the scaled SVG to be much better readable than a scaled PNG. Regards, Ingo ~~~~~~ Manage your subscription at http://www.freelists.org/list/projectaon
