HiFoursquare POIS are not the most accurate locations available: they are collected by ordinary users who usually have no clue about gps accuracy and how to get best results. Some are collected even on places where there is no gps coverage available. Because 4S sorts the venues according their popularity this is hard to notice.

I don't use the Seeing Eye app, but Blindsquare keeps telling me that there's a super Wal-Mart as I walk down a particular street. The problem is that said Wal-Mart, were it to appear where Blindsquare insists, would crush an intersection and a bunch of houses. The actual building is about two miles away from where the map says it is. I'm not down-playing anyone's experiences, but remember that inaccuracies will happen in any mapping system. I live not too far from a little strip mall which among other things has a Safeway, a Supercuts, and a T.J. Max. There are a number of smaller businesses that were there at one point but are now gone, yet they're still listed in Seeing Eye. Also, though I haven't checked this one in a while, I used to go to this Trampoline place in Bellevue but it's now closed. Last I checked, it was still in the map data, though I haven't checked in a while. -----Original Message----- From: gps-talkusers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:gps-talkusers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ray Carette Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2014 9:35 AM To: gps-talkusers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gps-talkusers] Re: communicating productively about the Seeing Eye app I have run into symilar probblems except that wht I find is some landmarks that it gives are either way off i.e Pappajohns Pizza used to be at the corner of Concord and Elm streets here in Manchester NH but has not been there for at least 1-2 years. Also Manchester Housing Authority (MHRA, they have it at Chestnut and Hanover that one is actually located at Pine and hanover which is 1 block East of where the map says it is. I do not know if that is before or after update since I am new to this app so I won't comment on that either way. I will say thoughas far as directions and most landmarks are concerned, I find it to be very useful and I'm confident that it is only going to improve as time goes on. I would also like to thank the folks who have made it possible for us blind/visual impaired folks to have a reliable source for directions to places as that hass never been possible before so dispite some immperfections, let's be thankful for the work that has been put forth thus far and the work that continues to be put towards improvement. I use my GPS in motorized mode and the problem I find is that destinations are announced long before we get to them. I find that 5 to 10 minutes later is when we've actually arrived. The directions given are great and I like using motorized mode when on paratransit or in a cab. I sure can tell how off course para is and try to guide them in the right direction! I just can't successfully search for pois. I'm told that pois I know are within ten miles don't exist. That didn't seem to be a problem until after the last upgrade! So, Mike, I'll be anxious to hear what the next upgrade has to offer. I've not used pedestrian mode only because I don't have a safe carrier for my cell phone so I generally use my Trekker Breeze. In any case, it could be that geographically there might be better success in some locations than in others. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike Arrigo <n0oxy@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: gps-talkusers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Saturday, July 5, 2014 8:07 pm Subject: [gps-talkusers] Re: communicating productively about the Seeing Eye appI tend to switch back and forth, in many cases I will use the tomtom pois since blsquare handles pois from foursquare. I have found, at least in this area, that using the tomtom maps provides a much more accurate address than open street maps does. I mainly use Foresquare and it comes up with some interesting stuff, but part of the problem is it comes up with junk people put up with noinformation. For example, it comes up with intersections and trail heads as points of interest, which are not that useful to me when I'm just looking to see what's around. I think a better crowd-sourced solution would be to somehow upload the data you've already gathered from having a GPS product for the BrailleNote and other devices to the Seeing Eye servers, then allowing us to add to those pois, much like is already possible with the BN and other products. I'm also not sure what the issue with Foresquare pois is, but it'll tell me well before 50 miles from the current locationthat there are no more pois around. From: gps-talkusers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:gps-talkusers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Michael May Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 4:21 PM To: gps-talkusers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gps-talkusers] communicating productively about the Seeing Eye app Hello List, I would like to address the recent emails about the Seeing Eye app in two parts. First I will talk about productive communications and separately about specific map data and feature items. There is nothing to be gained by insulting a person especially using profanity. Neither are allowed on this list. Most importantly, those type of comments are not going to make an app improve. Sendero welcomes all respectful feedback on this list orprivately.Anyone who knows me personally or who knows Sendero can testify to the fact that Sendero does listen. Just because we can't do something about an issue doesn't mean we aren't hearing you. The mere fact that several of us monitor and respond on this list should be strong indication of our commitment. In fact, Sendero would never have created an iPhone app if it weren't for users urging us to do so. There is little value in a for-profit company having a low volume low priced app. The money just isn't there to be profitable. The American Printing House for the Blind is a large nonprofit that doesn't have to make NearbyExplorer app pay for itself. Some users complain about $69 being a high price for our app but this doesn't come close to paying for the initial development or future development. Only the most benevolent for-profit companies can justify creating an accessibility app. I am very sorry to hear about these experiences of the Seeing Eye app not working well for some of you. I use it every day quite successfully and we hear the same from many users. We will have a new release shortly at this anniversary of the first release and I will be curious to hear how that impacts those of you not liking theTomTom maps.I will comment further once that update is out.
