??? Not sure what you are saying here.
Obviously Verizon is not calling it quits with FIOS in your neighborhood, if
they are no longer selling DSL. Overbuilding cable is tough; you need to take
customers from cable and DBS. It looks like they have decent market share
across their DSL footprint.
Obviously they did not have the power to force people to subscribe to FIOS
services. It appears they can't force you to upgrade from DSL to FIOS
broadband. It looks like you can get 50 Mbps FIOS Broadband for about $50/mo.
Looks like Cox offers broadband starting at $44.95/mo.
If you mean they called it quits on new deployments, the reason seems obvious -
they could not get an adequate ROI and chose to put their available capital
into businesses that produce a better return.
What is "inferior" is a bad business decision. The practical result of this
is to further limit the competition for broadband service, which is extremely
limited anyway, as long as wireless broadband remains unreasonably expensive
for general purpose access.
What is inferior is your DSL service. How much are you paying for DSL now?
Looks like the cheapest package is about $20 when added to phone service.
Perhaps you are just unwilling to pay for faster broadband?
What is limiting further investments in broadband is the high cost of
overbuilds to compete with entrenched cable systems that made major investments
years ago at much lower cost. And the prospect of Title II rate regulation that
could limit the return on investment.

Craig
