Craig, as always, it would help if you read my post, before jerking

That's not an answer Bert. You never said what they should have
deployed.
So I repeat: read the post, all of it, and then jerk your knee. I said two
things that would have made offering broadband less cost intensive: upgrading
the DSL offerings and/or fixed wireless (which would be easier to deploy than
mobile wireless). The problem was they put all their eggs in the one most
expensive basket, FTTH.
Thank you for confirming what I wrote in the last two responses.
Confirmed nothing you said, and you're still wrong.
The article says:
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/14/business/verizon-workers-strike.html?action=click&contentCollection=Technology&module=RelatedCoverage®ion=Marginalia&pgtype=article
"Still, there continues to be great demand for the broadband service, where
margins are quite high. And while companies that invest in fiber optics like to
see good returns on multiple services rather than just one to justify the
expense, Mr. Olgeirson notes that some of Verizon's competitors have not been
deterred by this issue."
So let me explain those words, Craig.
If you pick the most expensive option for broadband, as Verizon did, then you
need more sources of revenue. If you don't pick the most expensive option, then
you don't need so many sources of revenue, to offer broadband. Demand for
broadband is high, it says, as are margins. So even though the article didn't
state this explicitly, the problem was that Verizon focused exclusively on a
too expensive approach.
So wireless is a growing business with lower operating costs
while wireline is declining.
Show me anything that says wireline broadband is in decline. Besides, a fixed
wireless scheme, say something like LMDS, would also have been a "lower
operating cost" business.
So, do you think it is desirable for the government to subsidize
the deployment of broadband by Verizon?
You're on another roll here, Craig. You're not making any sense.
The point remains. The NYT article focused on this "good middle class jobs"
aspect, instead of explaining the tradeoffs in technologies. As I've said many
times, trying to standardize everything on FTTH is very expensive. So they
ended up quitting at 20% coverage. Others didn't have to quit. They took a more
gradual approach.
Bert
