I should add this:

The article does point out that Verizon is more interested in wireless, but as 
we've discussed before, this type of wireless-for-mobile is not a reasonable 
substitute for the cabled variety of broadband, for pricing reasons. In 
principle, some form of perhaps fixed-service-only wireless, priced more like 
cabled broadband, could be a winner.

Why not pursue that option? Or why not offer transitional forms of higher rate 
DSL, to continue using the twisted pair cables to homes, similar to what cable 
companies are doing with their coax?
