Satelllites don't, 3G cellular phones don't, most of the deployed 802.11 don't, cable systems don't, PON networks like Verizon FiOS don't, and the more technically successful of UWB schemes don't either. Satellites use single carrier and MPEG-2 TS, not so different from ATSC.
I wouldn't use OFDM for satellite either, what is that about? 3G phones? Maybe 4G phones. I hear that the next generation will be using COFDM at least Qualcomm is working on it. And why would a PON network need COFDM? Don't know how you separate out 802.11 a, b and g. Most sales have been and are for a long time now been of dual or tri units. Only the first and the slowest is not OFDM, b. The future of 802.11 is looking like more and more OFDM across the board. Suggesting that 802.11 b is the widest deployed at the moment in this context has virtually no meaning. As to UWB Bluetooth had decided on an OFDM version. Could you list some of the "more technically successful of UWB schemes". http://whitepapers.techrepublic.com.com/whitepaper.aspx?docid=236835 Here is a technical version of OFDM UWB. http://whitepapers.techrepublic.com.com/whitepaper.aspx?docid=102958 Intel is on the OFDM side of this and wants to incorporate UWB into their reference designs. I will bet on Intel and OFDM UWB. And what is trivial about what? Bob Miller
I see this obsession overt COFDM very much in the same light as the obsession over ethanol fuels. The best thing you can say about ethanol fuels is that they serve the causes of politicians who need pork barrel programs to get votes. Gullible constituents get hooked and reeled in by the rhetoric, and won't they be surprised when they discover that this facile solution doesn't solve anything. I think Tom has by far the best solution. We need to make sure nothing will further delay the switch-off date of analog TV. Only then will the broadcasters and the FCC focus on the real issues, instead fo being time and time again sidetracked by the special interests and their clever manipulation of their information-challenged audiences.
